Abstract: L’articolo esplora l’«umanesimo socialista» di Edward Palmer Thompson individuandovi la relazione problematica che egli intrattiene con la «modernità». Thompson ha pensato infatti il «farsi» della coscienza della classe lavoratrice sottolineando il legame che questa ha con le tradizioni millenaristiche e utopiche. Tale prospettiva, oltre a un interesse storiografico, ha avuto un impatto sui dibattiti del periodo del «farsi» delle idee di Thompson. E questi dibatti hanno riguardato – come per Goldmann e Fortini sui quali questo numero si concentra – il tentativo di fare luce sulla tradizione umanista e utopica all’interno del dibattito marxista.

Abstract: The article explores Edward Palmer Thompson’s «Socialist Humanism», in which it singles out the problematic relationship that he has with «modernity». Thompson thought the making of the working class consciousness by stressing its connection to millenarian and utopian traditions. This view, in addition to a historiographical interest, had an impact on the debates of the period of the making of Thompson’s ideas. And these debates regarded – as for Goldmann and Fortini on whom this issue focuses – the attempt to shed light on the humanist and utopian tradition in the Marxist debate.
